Slides from a seminar presentation on the artist Emily Carr, with particular reference to part two of her autobiography, Growing Pains.

This part of the book sees Carr travel to London for a protracted stay of over five years. Ultimately, she leaves despondent and feeling that she has failed to make the breakthrough in her painting that she had hoped, and has been plagued by dreadful mental health. However, in retrospect, we can see the transformation both in the painter and in the person that lay the foundations for her subsequent artistic journey in France and, critically, in Canada.
